This course provides a study of the semantic, structural, and rhetorical resources of the English language as they relate to the principles of effective writing. Examples of prose from various fields and periods serve as models of effective writing. Students are required to take the Advanced Placement Examination offered by the College Board.

 

A.P. AMERICAN STUDIES PROGRAM-
Advanced Placement English Language and Composition engages students in becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Advanced Placement United States History Program is designed to provide students with the analytical skills and factual knowledge necessary to deal critically with the problems and materials in American History. The American Studies Program prepares students for intermediate and advanced college courses by making demands upon them equivalent to those made by full year introductory college courses.

Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition is a college-level course meeting graduation requirements in English. This course involves students in the study and practice of writing and in the study of literature. Students are required to take the College Board examination. SUMMER READING IS REQUIRED. Advanced Placement European History provides students the opportunity to develop the analytic skills and factual knowledge necessary to deal critically with the formation of generalizations from primary sources in history, the synthesis and evaluation of information, the development of a set of criteria for judging proposed courses of action in terms of actual and projected consequences, the comparison of eras with similar trends, analysis of the impact of major historical figures and groups on European and world events, the detection of bias in making conclusions, and the emergence of patterns in historical development.

* Students in this AP course will partake in Socratic discussion, debates, mock trials, and role plays.

This course develops advanced reading skills for students who plan to continue their formal education after high school. The content emphasizes vocabulary, comprehension, study skills, and test-taking skills and will develop these areas relative to the demands of the SAT and ACT requirements. The content should include, but not be limited to, instruction in writing, vocabulary, comprehension (literal, inferential and evaluative) as well as develop critical thinking and analytical skill. The methods of study and test-taking are examined, and individual methods suiting each student are developed.
