AND PAINTING I

Drawing and Painting I is the entry level art course at Flanagan High. This
course introduces the student to the language of art, covers basic design techniques,
and provides students with the critical thinking skills that enable them to
make thoughtful decisions about the quality of artworks. Course content includes
the study of the elements and principles of art. Students will prepare creative
designs that demonstrate their understanding of these concepts. Each student
will produce a notebook that covers the works of renowned artists. These works
will be described, interpreted, analyzed, and judged in the student’s
own words. These reading and writing exercises are a part of Flanagan High’s
commitment to the improvement of academic skills.

The focus of this course is to further explore artistic materials and improve
technical skills. Students will work creatively from life sources, transferring
the three-dimensional objects they see into the two-dimensional objects they
draw. Instruction will be given for the effective use of graphite, charcoal,
colored pencil, ink, gouache, watercolor, and acrylic paints. Each student will
produce a notebook that covers the works of renowned artists. These works will
be described, interpreted, analyzed, and judged in the student’s own words.
These reading and writing exercises are a part of Flanagan High’s commitment
to the improvement of academic skills.

Portfolio is for the student who has mastered drawing skills and media techniques.
In addition, the student must have a working knowledge of artistic terminology
and be familiar with the works of many artists. With this background, it is
expected that the student will create a portfolio of work that demonstrates
creative and technical skills.

COMPREHENSIVE

Art /3-D Comprehensive will provide the student an opportunity to appreciate
and understand various methods used by sculptors to create three dimensional
forms. Studio production in additive and subtractive methods will include the
use of paper maché, clay, plaster, wire, and paper.

Ceramics/Pottery II provides a recognition of properties, limitations and possibilities
of clay, a basic understanding of clay construction through hand building techniques,
investigation of decorating techniques and demonstration of skill with ceramic
tools. Production of clay pieces include pinch, coil, and slab methods. Ceramics/Pottery
II introduces the wheel throwing method.

Sculpture I provides for studio production and appreciation in three-dimensional
media such as plaster, clay, wood, stone, metal, plastics, and paper. Modeling,
forming, additive, and subtractive methods of sculpture will be used to master
representation of abstraction of the natural world. Sculpture II is a continuation
of Sculpture I and will provide the intermediate student an opportunity to utilize
technical and compositional expression in sculpture.

Advanced Placement Art/Drawing Portfolio is a carefully planned developmental
program which adheres to the guidelines published in the latest College Entrance
Examination Board booklet. This portfolio is designed to address a very broad
interpretation of drawing issues. The student must produce a large group of
high quality and original work that demonstrates their ability to draw and paint
from observational study. Portfolios are submitted to the College Board in May
for judging. Passing portfolios are eligible for college credits at most colleges
and universities.

interpretation of two dimensional design issues. The student must produce a
large group of high quality and original work that expresses purposeful decision
making about how to use the elements and principles of art in an integrative
way. Portfolios are submitted to the College Board in May for judging. Passing
portfolios are eligible for college credits at most colleges and universities.

using additive, subtractive, and/or fabrication processes. Portfolios are submitted

Art History III is a continuation
